All Time Low has “utterly” denied allegations of sexual misconduct made against the band, including claims that guitarist Jack Barakat abused an underage girl, slamming them as “absolutely and unequivocally false.”
The controversy started brewing earlier in October — when a woman posted a TikTok claiming that an unnamed “pop-punk band” had invited her on to their tour bus when she was 13 — and boiled over Monday after more incendiary claims of underage sexual abuse were lobbed on Monday in a bombshell Twitter thread.
The initial TikTok clip first spurred social media sleuths to link details from her story to All Time Low. She claimed band members “literally tried to take my bra off for their nasty collection” and “offered me beers” before they “got my friend’s phone number and prank called her for months.”
On Monday, the band — formed in Maryland circa 2003 and known hits such as 2007’s “Dear Maria, Count Me In” and 2020’s “Monsters” with Demi Lovato and blackbear — finally responded to the accusations with a joint response to the 1.5 million followers on their official Twitter account, captioned: “A statement from the four of us.”
“When a TikTok video gained traction a few weeks ago alluding to inappropriate behavior within our camp, we chose not to respond because of the glaring inconsistencies in the story and the apparent reluctance to mention us by name. We felt that a response would have elevated and escalated an outright lie, and in doing so, robbed actual victims of abuse of their very real and very important collective voice.”
Just when the band might have thought things were living up to their name, a now-deleted Twitter thread posted on Monday featured an anonymous woman accusing Barakat of sexual assault when she was a 15 years old during the band’s 2011 tour and continuing on subsequent tours, The Independent reported. She alleged that in 2016, another member of the band witnessed her being assaulted by Barakat, 33, and claimed that the abuse continued until she was 21.
“I now realize that I was being manipulated by a man who groomed me during a time when I was an emotionally vulnerable child,” she wrote in the thread that has since been deleted, along with her account, adding that the incidents involved drugs and spurred an eating disorder, multiple suicide attempts and mental illness.
All Time Low’s statement on Monday night also addressed these more recent claims: “We have to state with outright certainty that what is being said about us is completely and utterly false.”
The group also vowed to uncover the source of these “false” allegations and explore legal action — but stressed that they “at this point it is of utmost importance to us that you know we hear you, we stand with you, and we stand collectively for truth.”
