HBO’s “Westworld” is a show full of twists and turns, and Season 3 will have its most ambitious turn yet: a crossover with “Game of Thrones.”
David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, the controversial “GoT” showrunners, will have a cameo on Season 3, EW revealed Thursday. The duo will appear as lab techs in Delos, the shadowy company that runs the series of luxury vacation spot “Parks” filled with robot “Hosts.”
Set in the 2050s, the sci-fi epic follows robots in the Delos parks, led by Evan Rachel Wood’s Dolores, as they ascend to a higher level of consciousness and begin rebelling against humans who use them as playthings.
So far, the show has been set inside the parks, which are replicas of historical eras such as the Wild West. So even though it’s the 2050s, we don’t know what the outside world really looks like. As shown by the trailers, that will change in Season 3, which leaves the parks to show a “Blade Runner” looking future. Plus: Aaron Paul (“Breaking Bad”) joins as a new cast member.
As previously revealed by TV Line, much of Season 3’s action takes place in a bizarro Los Angeles, where robots and humans coexist in a very different way than they do in the Delos parks. Other new cast additions include Lena Waithe (“Master of None”), rapper Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi (“How to Make It in America”), John Gallagher Jr. (“The Newsroom”), Michael Ealy (“Stumptown”), Tommy Flanagan (“Sons of Anarchy”) and NFL running back Marshawn Lynch.
The “Game of Thrones” showrunners have made themselves scarce since their show’s wildly unpopular series finale in May. They pulled out of appearing at San Diego Comic Con, and also exited their planned “Star Wars” movies. They’re currently making shows under a $200 million deal with Netflix.
“Westworld” Season 3 premieres March 15th on HBO.
