George Kittle backs Jimmy Garoppolo amid swirling Tom Brady-49ers rumors

Nobody puts Jimmy G. in the corner.

On Wednesday, 49ers tight end George Kittle appeared to weigh in on recent chatter linking impending free agent Tom Brady to San Francisco, making it clear Garoppolo is his quarterback.

“Lets run it back 10!” Kittle captioned an Instagram shot shoulder-bumping Garoppolo.

Though Brady’s suspected suitors — including the Buccaneers, Titans, Raiders and Patriots themselves — have long been established, the 49ers appear to be a wild card. The quarterback’s hometown team reportedly is “closing hard on the outside.”

“I think it’s from both [sides],” Patriots insider Tom E. Curran said Tuesday on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Radio, referring to Brady and the 49ers. “I think there’s an appeal. What’s interesting about that is the Patriots sent Jimmy Garoppolo out there for such short collateral?”

Garoppolo, who is one month removed from the Niners’ 31-20 Super Bowl 2020 loss to the Chiefs, was selected 62nd overall by New England in the 2014 draft. Three years later, they shipped the quarterback to San Francisco. He went on to sign a five-year, $137.5 million deal in 2018.

Though Garoppolo, 28, is still in the middle of his monster contract, the 49ers can get out of it fairly cheaply. Curran hypothesizes that it’s possible the pieces to a quarterback swap were put in place some time ago.

“Could Belichick just say, ‘Hey, why don’t you sign this guy [Brady] when he becomes available two years? I’ll take Jimmy back, he’ll get you the Super Bowl you probably could have had this year if you had Brady and we’ll start fresh,’” he said.

Although it remains to be seen if Brady will get a fresh start elsewhere, another member of the 49ers roster is fully supportive of his current quarterback.

“It’s ludicrous,” running back Jeff Wilson Jr. said Wednesday to Sports Illustrated. “[Garoppolo] just took us all the way to the Super Bowl, great season, [15] wins. I mean there’s not a lot of quarterbacks that’s even in this league that just had a season like that. And then you go from that season taking a team all the way to the Super Bowl, to talks of being traded?”
