Dave Gettleman filled one major hole Thursday night with the selection of offensive tackle Andrew Thomas and he hopes to have erased another weakness with his first pick Friday night.
The Giants took Alabama safety Xavier McKinney, who should have the inside track to be the opening-day starter opposite Jabrill Peppers for a defense in desperate need of playmakers.
A three-year contributor, the 6-foot, 201-pound McKinney is coming off a standout season. He produced 95 tackles, three interceptions, three sacks and four forced fumbles for the Crimson Tide last year. He was the first defensive pick of the second round, as the teams ahead of the Giants all went offense. He was also the first safety taken in the draft.
