Packers put Aaron Rodgers on notice with Jordan Love NFL Draft pick

Aaron Rodgers is officially on the clock.

The Packers traded up to the 26th pick to secure Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the 2020 NFL Draft.

The 21-year-old Aggies signal-caller will presumably serve as an understudy for Rodgers on the Green Bay depth chart for at least a year.

Rodgers, 36, is entering the third year of a four-year, $134 million contract extension he signed back in 2018. If he’s got some feelings to work through, he could always reach out to an old mentor: in 2005, a 21-year-old Rodgers was drafted in the first round to be the heir to 36-year-old Brett Favre’s throne.

Love has been a polarizing prospect among scouts, who has drawn lofty comparisons to Chiefs signal-caller Patrick Mahomes.

“I like that comparison,” the quarterback said earlier this year. “We’ve both got strong arms. [Mahomes] obviously makes ridiculous throws off schedule and stuff like that, some I’ve seen and tried to model my game to make throws like that. I hope to be on the same platform as him.”

Others have criticized his inconsistency following a disappointing final season at Utah State in which he tallied 20 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. He surprised some by declaring for the draft this year, as some speculated he might transfer to a Power 5 program to hone his skills and bolster his stock.

Rodgers was the No. 24 overall pick in the 2005 NFL Draft and sat behind Brett Favre for three seasons. History could be repeating itself in Green Bay.
