Rangers stars Igor Shesterkin, Pavel Buchnevich involved in Brooklyn car accident

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin and forward Pavel Buchnevich were involved in a car accident on Sunday night, team president John Davidson said on Monday.

The two Russians were taken to New York Presbyterian Hospital with minor injuries after the crash.

Davidson made the announcement at the club’s practice facility in Tarrytown, saying that Shesterkin was driving the car in Brooklyn at 8:30 p.m. Sunday night when someone made a U-turn in front of them. The airbags were deployed and both players were buckled — “thankfully for that,” Davidson said. Both players were brought to the hospital and seen by team physicians.

Buchenvich was “quite shaken up,” according to Davidson, but he suffered “no significant injuries and he’s listed as day-to-day.” Shesterkin, though, suffered a non-displaced rib fracture.

“The estimate right now is that he will be reassessed regarding his injury in a couple of weeks,” Davidson said. “In our business, you’re certainly dealt curveballs all the time. That’s a tough curveball we have to deal with.”

Shesterkin had emerged as the team’s No. 1 goalie since his recall on Jan. 6, winning nine of his first 10 career starts. This will bring the goaltending rotation back to Henrik Lundqvist — who has made only three starts since Shesterkin was called up — and Alexander Georgiev. The Rangers’ next game is Tuesday at the Coliseum against the Islanders.

Davidson revealed the news before announcing the Rangers signed Chris Kreider to a seven-year contract extension.
