Rick Pitino wins bet with son on Brock Lesnar-Drew McIntyre WrestleMania 36 match

Rick Pitino picked up his first win as Iona coach.

His son Richard’s Minnesota team appears headed to New Rochelle to play the Gaels this season after dad won the two’s friendly WrestleMania 36 Twitter bet to decide who hosts this year’s clash.

The Rick Pitino-backed Drew McIntyre defeated Brock Lesnar for the WWE championship in the Day 2 main event of WrestleMania 36 on Sunday night. Iona would have played at the Golden Gophers had Lesnar, who won a NCAA heavyweight wrestling championship at Minnesota, left with the belt.

Rick Pitino, who was recently hired by Iona, tweeted a YouTube video of Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” after the match and thanked McIntyre for win – even though the outcomes are predetermined. Richard retweeted it.

The idea for the bets started after Rick tweeted the WWE’s Mandy Rose is an Iona grad and eventually offered the wager to his son with most of the sports world on hold because of the coronavirus pandemic. His grandkids also appear to be big WWE fans.
